A look at David Usborne's collection

In object to object, I chose two references, a screen magnifier and a massage roller. Today I got a closer look at these two pieces of the collection.

The screen magnifier is much bigger than I expected, it's made of glass and it's heavy. It would have been used to magnify an early computer or TV display, an item featured in the film Brazil.

I put an appropriately sized booklet under a screen magnifier to see how it enlarges. It did act as a magnifier, though there was a certain amount of distortion that could probably be mitigated a bit when pulled away from the screen at some distance.

But put aside the magnifying effect, directly in front of the screen to place a similar size convex lens to magnify this idea is still very interesting, out of the common handheld magnifying glass inertia. I guess this is one of the reasons why this simple craft is in David's collection. Taking this collection as a reference for design, I might be able to conduct an in-depth research on lenses and learn from the out-of-the-box design ideas reflected in this collection.

Another item in the collection, a massage roller, is made up of a wooden stick body and a number of small rubber massage discs, the whole of which is a rotating structure. There are a number of massage rollers in David's collection, in all sorts of interesting shapes and different ways of operating them, and I've chosen one of them to have a closer look at. I thought that I could research the history of massage devices before making further designs, or I could be inspired by the structure of this collection or the way it rotates.
