Development of ‘Image and machine’
In the Image and machine project, I focused on researching images and the final output finished product was the pendulum. As my studies are planned to make multi-sensory jewellery, I need to direct the research outputs from this project to jewellery design.
Firstly, as the small ceramic pieces that were used as ornaments were too heavy, if I was going to continue to make jewellery using ceramic digital printing, I needed to make them lighter and thinner as a way of adapting them to wearability.
So I made ceramic sheets by dripping mud on plasterboard and digitally printed them on the ceramic surface using images made in Image and machine.
I tried to make these little ceramic pieces into brooches. I made the brooch backstitch out of copper pieces and wire.
This time I used epoxy resin to attach brooch back pins to the back of small ceramic pieces to create a simple set of brooches.
After this attempt, I found that I could achieve a lighter effect by making small ceramic pieces out of clay, although the shapes would be more random and difficult to control. So the next step could be to explore other ways of making ceramic pieces as well, for comparison and trade-offs.
In addition, the backstitching glued to the ceramics does not look complete and delicate enough, and needs to be followed up by trying more professional inlay methods.
