Test of the relationship between shape and feeling
For fast making, I made a square bracelet that I thought would give a sense of determination. As scientific studies have shown that the sense of touch influences a person's behaviour and judgement in the moment. A hard, angular tactile sensation makes a person's position stronger, just as a hard chair makes a person more likely to win in a negotiation.
As David's collection of massage rollers uses different shapes of massage modules, I wanted to further explore the different sensations that different shapes give when they come into contact with the skin.
I made different shapes of bracelets from strips of cardboard of the same length and test.
My feeling is that the fewer sides the bracelet has, the more cramped it will feel, and the closer to round the bracelet is, the more comfortable and loose it will feel.
I think this experiment is less than comprehensive though, as I just created a ring and placed my hand in it, and the forms of contact with different shapes are actually quite diverse.
