Images in ‘Sound of aversion’

How are these images created?

Using water as a lens, I created an imaging system to visualise sound by using the vibrations of sound to generate water waves.

Through interviews, I collected a series of images of obnoxious sounds and measured the frequencies of these sounds with a frequency analyser. I put a basin of water on the speaker, placed each of these images under the water, and played the corresponding frequency sound with the speaker, so that the water waves caused different distortions to the images, blurring the boundary between the visual and auditory sensations, and making them merge.
